Hospice patients and their families are going through very difficult times as they face their end of life. Some often experience terrible misfortune as they transition to their final days. They often need more help than hospice staff can offer. That is where the Angelic Health Foundation steps in. Donations made to this charitable arm of Angelic Health are earmarked to aid patients in extreme need, such as assisting with daily living expenses, granting a final wish, or acquiring special equipment not covered by insurance. Contributions also support innovative patient and community initiatives, and recognition programs for our Veterans, and education programs.
The Angelic Heath Foundation is a 501c3 charity so your donations are tax-deductible and can be made in honor or memory of a loved one, or as a special way to acknowledge others. A four-member community volunteer board including Board Chair Nick Pittman; Vice Chair Jeff Whitaker, Secretary/Treasurer Voula Liacopulos, and Vince Papaccio review and adjudicate requests. Helping Others
Although we have not used their real names to protect patient confidentiality, the stories on the following page are real and illustrate how donations make a difference. Consider making a contribution so that we can continue to help our patients and their families beyond the bedside.
In Need of Food
Marie is a hospice patient living alone. With only income from Social Security, she often had to choose between paying her rent and buying food. She was also housebound and with no family or friends to help she was unable to get food. Although she never asked for help, her Angelic Hospice Social Worker recognized the need and secured a grant from the Angelic Health Foundation to purchase groceries.
Mother and Son Reunion
Joan and her son John lived in separate nursing facilities, as both were physically unable to care for themselves. Although they talked on the phone, they had not seen each other in five years. With her health continuing to fail, Joan wanted to see her son again. Because they both had conditions that required special transportation for wheelchairs, the visit was arranged for John to travel to see his mother in the facility where she was living. Joan passed soon after, but the two were both grateful to spend time together.
Quality of Life Impacted by Utility Costs
Peter had COPD and other breathing issues that require a concentrator and nebulizer to help him breathe. Although Medicare covers the cost for equipment and medications, the electric bill cost is not covered and increased tremendously due to round-the-clock needs for breathing assistance. The family routinely sent Peter to the hospital when the bills got too high to pay. The Angelic Health Foundation paid the bill, allowing Peter to stay in his own home where he wanted to be rather than be sent to the hospital.
No TV
Sam’s only entertainment was watching TV, but he could not afford the cable bill, and it was shut off. The Angelic Health Foundation covered the cost so that he could once again enjoy his favorite TV shows.
An Infestation Threatened Care
Other hospice providers were reluctant to take Fred on because of the infestation of bed bugs in his home. But not Angelic, and thanks to the AHF the house was exterminated, and the pests were gone.
Too Hot
The summer heat and humidity were not subsiding for Linda who was suffering in the sweltering heat in her apartment. With no air conditioning even the fans were not providing relief. AHF grant purchased an air conditioner, so she was able to be more comfortable.
Final Wishes
When Lorraine, a hospice patient, was unable to get out to see her favorite local band play, Angelic Health staff arranged for the musicians to give her a personal concert in her own backyard.
Joe grew up around horses and truly missed having one of his own. Hearing Joe tell stories of his childhood and his horses; an Angelic Hospice Volunteer worked with staff to arrange for small horses to come to Joe at his home. He couldn't stop talking about his wonderful experience.
Charles had moved to the United States many years ago and made it his home. But now as he faced his final days, he wanted to see his family and friends in Kenya one last time but did not have enough money to purchase an airline ticket. An Angelic Health Foundation grant made up the difference so his final wish could come true.
In his early teens, Larry was one of our younger patients and knew how hard his diagnosis had been on his family. He wanted to thank them and his family priest for all they did with a dinner out. The Angelic Health Foundation made it happen.
Education and Community Support
The Angelic Health Foundation supports our healthcare future with nursing and social work scholarships at Stockton University and Atlantic Cape Community College. They also sponsor the Angelic Health Education Academy CEU Conferences for healthcare providers, and community-based education stress reduction and grief support programs to for the public. Additionally, the AHF purchased virtual dementia tour equipment for education in the community and with our families; and in the fall of each year the AHF provides grants to like-charities which have supported our patients and the community.
Spreading Kindness
Stories like these are common. You can honor your loved ones with donations in their name. Celebrating a holiday, birthday, an anniversary or another milestone coming up? Consider donation in lieu of gifts in any amount and for any reason. This act of kindness is far-reaching and touches the lives of many.
